What AI reads in a review

A review helps an AI answer most when it names the job and the town, such as a hail damage claim in Wichita or a metal roof in Bozeman, rather than just saying great service. AI tools summarize what homeowners say about a company, so the words inside reviews become the words in the answer. A hundred five-star reviews that say nothing about the work give an assistant little to repeat when someone asks who handles insurance claims or emergency leaks. A smaller set that mentions the roof type, the problem, the town and how the crew left the yard gives it material for several different questions. Recent reviews count too, because a homeowner after a storm wants a roofer who is busy and answering the phone now. Put a live review count on your own homepage in plain text as well. KKV Labs' index found that only 22% of the 520 roofing homepages it read show a review count a reader can see.

How to ask, and the rules to keep

Ask at the moment the homeowner is happiest: the day the final inspection passes, or when the dumpster leaves and the yard is clean. Send a short text with a direct link to your Google review form, and suggest what they might mention, such as the job, their town and how the claim or the cleanup went. Do not write the review for them.

Keep to the platform rules. Google does not allow discounts, gifts or payment in return for reviews, and it does not allow review gating, which means asking only the customers you expect to be happy or steering unhappy ones somewhere else. Yelp asks businesses not to request reviews at all, so point customers to Google and keep your Yelp listing accurate. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm sentence or two that mentions the job where it fits.

A simple acceptance check

Open your last 20 Google reviews and count how many name a specific job, such as a replacement, a repair, a storm claim or a metal roof, and how many name a town. Then check the dates and count how many arrived in the last 90 days. If fewer than half name a job, your requests need a better prompt, not more volume. A good agency should hand you a written request kit, with the text messages and the follow-up, and leave the sending to you, because a request has to come from the roofer to be real.
